We introduce the novel concept of a resolving decomposition of a polynomial module as a combinatorial structure that allows for the effective construction of free resolutions. It provides a unifying framework for different types of bases. As an example we show how involutive bases and marked bases induce resolving decompositions. In addition to that we show how the Stanley conjecture is related to the concept of resolving decompositions.
