Abstract. The Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt Theorem states that the canonical graded ring associated to the enveloping algebra U(L) of a finite dimensional Lie algebra L is isomorphic to the symmetric algebra S(L) of L. During the lecture we will discuss several generalisations of this classical result, and present some of their applications.
